This is a study of the book of Proverbs. The purpose is to see where our lives do not align with God (foolishness). Any area that is contradictory to God’s word must change if we desire to live the Abundant Life God desires for us to live. Repent means to change the way we think which changes the way we act.
The study will be posted here with the most recent entries first. To read from the beginning, please start at the bottom with the April 1 post.
The Benefits of Embracing Wisdom, April 2
1My son, if you will receive my words, And lay up my commandments with you; — (take possession and lay up as one does treasure is to store up as in “out of the treasure or deposit of the heart.” God’s words are wisdom are to be deposited into us as a source from which to live. God Commandments become the gears of life. Every decision and movement is based on God’s commands. Do the “Do’s!”)
2So that you make your ear attend unto wisdom, (this is a constant ongoing process)
And your heart incline to discernment; (to incline is to lay upon. We are to lay our hearts with its purposes intents and will before God; not be proud; have no fight or objection to God)
3Yes, if you call for understanding, (We are to call aloud for understanding. With His voice God created everything that exists.)
And lift up your voice for discernment; (Raise your voice for understanding. Understanding is taking the wisdom/truth you have heard in God’s word and being able to correctly apply it to your life.)
4If you seek her as silver, (Compare this to mining for silver. It requires work and action. Silver and Wisdom are worth mining to find.)
And search for her as for hid treasures; (What would we sacrifice or do if we knew the exact location of a hidden treasure? God’s treasure is here for ANYONE who searches for it. God hides it to protect it but He readily tells us where it is and then helps us find it when we choose to seek it.)
There were 4 verses of doing. Now comes the RESULT!
5Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD, (Fear is reverence for God. It is the opposite of pride. Just as we are careful not to step out of a moving car we become careful to stay in the ‘vehicle’ of REVERENCE FOR GOD and HIS WORD. We guide our lives by ‘does this line up with God’s Word?’ or ‘would I do this if Jesus were here with me?’ We choose to love what God loves – people-, hate what God hates –sin – and allow only those things which are in heaven without exception.)
And find the knowledge of God. (Once we make that choice we find how to live this life.)
6For the LORD gives wisdom, (God gives wisdom freely. He knows everything. And He tells us when we listen.)
Out of His mouth comes knowledge and discernment; (His words – written in the Bible and spoken to us as we listen.
Wisdom is TRUTH – HIS PERFECT WAY TO LIVE.
Knowledge is comprehension of it, knowing it.
Discernment or understanding is the practical application of it in your life.) Write this down and remember it.
7He lays up sound wisdom for the upright, (upright is righteousness – doing what pleases God)
He is a shield to them that walk in integrity; (Integrity is completeness and wholeness – no area hidden. Notice He says “walk.” We must be doing what we hear.)
8That He may guard the paths of justice, (God will be your defender against the accusations of your enemies in the court of the universe. When we walk out what God tells us, the enemy will through up our past in accusation to try to stop us.)
And preserve the way of His godly ones. (God defends us. He reminds us and the devil of Jesus’ accomplishment on the cross. We are godly – like God when we follow His words!)
9Then shall you understand righteousness and justice, (As we set our minds and hearts to follow God by practicing what we know, it becomes part of us. YOU WILL understand is a promise! Yea God!)
And equity, yes, every good path. (We find every good path of life. That’s worth seeking wisdom!)
10For wisdom shall enter into your heart, (Wisdom enters because we chose to walk with God having a teachable spirit, inclining our ears and hearts to Him.)
And knowledge shall be pleasant unto your soul; (Knowing God’s ways brings pleasure and peace to our soul – our thoughts, our emotions and our will.)
11Discretion shall watch over you, (Discretion is inner judgment of good, better, best or God.)
Discernment shall guard thee; (Discernment or understanding will preserve us from: v. 12-15 – evil, from perverse words and lies, men of darkness, crooked and wayward devices.)
12To deliver thee from the way of evil, From the men that speak froward things;
13Who leave the paths of uprightness, To walk in the ways of darkness;
14Who rejoice to do evil, And delight in the frowardness of evil;
15Who are crooked in their ways, And perverse in their paths;
16To deliver thee from the strange woman, (a strange woman is full of ungodly ways, who forsakes her husband, who forgets her covenant with God. V. 17)
Even from the alien woman that makes smooth her words; (She forgets she was made in the image of God and lowers herself to live in evil and ensnare others in her pool of deception. V. 17-20)
17That forsakes the lord of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God.
18For her house sinks down unto death, And her paths unto the shades;
19None that go unto her return, Neither do they attain unto the paths of life;
20That you may walk in the way of good men, (God desires and plans for people to walk among good men.)
And keep the paths of the righteous. (The paths of righteousness bring opportunities and good results.)
21For the upright shall dwell in the land, And the whole-hearted shall remain in it. (Consistency is a trademark of the wise. Foolishness is a lack of consistency. A fool tries the ways of God for a season with pride in his heart, then declares they don’t work and goes back to foolishness.)
22But the wicked shall be cut off from the land, And the faithless shall be plucked up out of it. (The fool’s end is to be cut off from God and to be eternally separated from Him.)
If I fear evil, is it because I don’t trust God to completely care for me, protect and keep me?
Is this what the world teaches: ‘God helps those who help themselves?,’ It is a major lie. GOD helps us because we cannot help ourselves.
Isn’t fear the power of evil?
Then isn’t faith the power of God in our lives?
Which is greater in my life?
Wisdom Versus Fool, April 1
(My notes are in italics.)
1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2To know wisdom and instruction; ALL people can know skillful and Godly Wisdom and instruction. Wisdom is from God.
To comprehend the words of understanding;
3To receive the discipline of wisdom, We must receive instruction in wise dealing.
Justice, and right, and equity;
4To give prudence to the simple, Prudence is given to the simple. Prudence is subtlety – insinuation craftily calculated to arouse natural curiosity. Father give me prudence in dealing with people. May I awaken their natural curiosity to learn and know You!
To the young man knowledge and discretion; Youth are given knowledge, imparted from others rather than from self. Seek wise mentors.
5That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning, The wise hear and gain information.
And the man of understanding (how to apply) may attain unto wise counsels; steer his course rightly
6To understand a proverb, and a figure;
The words of the wise, and their dark sayings. God knows everything. He imparts His wisdom to us. We must apply ourselves to gaining understanding of His wisdom. Otherwise we are fools.
7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Reverent and worshipful awe of the Lord is the beginning, the principal, choice part of knowledge – its starting point and its essence.
But the foolish despise wisdom and discipline. Father show me any area where I have despised wisdom and discipline. Where have I believed the words of the world over Yours? Have I considered Your words old-fashioned and out of touch?
8Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, And forsake not the teaching of thy mother; The wise person listens to the instruction (application for life and dealing in business and with people) of their father and the teaching of their mothers.(Mothers impart kindness and gentleness, nurturing)
9For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, And chains about thy neck. Wisdom brings honor. It adorns our bodies and lives.
10My son, if sinners entice thee, Consent thou not. They entice to do evil.
11If they say: ‘Come with us, Let us lie in wait for blood, The life is in the blood. Fools are obsessed with death. They are anti-life which is anti-God. The wise focus on life and righteousness – the ways of God.
Let us lurk for the innocent without cause; Evil needs no reason to do evil.
12Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, And whole, as those that go down into the pit;
13We shall find all precious substance, We shall fill our houses with spoil;
14Cast in thy lot among us; Let us all have one purse’— Fools rob others. They “steal, kill and destroy” like their father the devil. (John 10:10) Fools exchange the life they were created to live by God for the lure of things of earth that rust, rot and ruin.
15My son, walk not thou in the way with them, Restrain thy foot from their path;
16For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
17For in vain the net is spread in the eyes of any bird;
18And these lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk for their own lives.
19So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; It taketh away the life of the owners thereof. Where do we pursue things more than God? Are we being lured onto the path of foolishness? Where do we lift our voice against another in judgment, condemnation or ridicule?
20Wisdom crieth aloud in the streets, Wisdom cries out loudly. She can be heard in the streets! She uttereth her voice in the broad places;
21She calleth at the head of the noisy streets, At the entrances of the gates, in the city, she uttereth her words: Wisdom is loudly crying out everywhere people gather to guide them and guard them if only we will listen. Listen today for the wisdom of God in every place you are. It is easily available to ALL.
22‘How long, ye thoughtless, will ye love thoughtlessness? And how long will scorners delight them in scorning, They are self-confident, not God-confident. And fools hate knowledge?
23Turn you at my reproof; Behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24Because I have called, and ye refused,
I have stretched out my hand, and no man attended,
25But ye have set at nought all my counsel, And would none of my reproof;
26I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread cometh; If there is fear or dread of evil in an area of life, it reveals contrariness to God. We have chosen our way rather than God’s. He is calling us onto the right path. He extends His hand to guide and help.
27When your dread cometh as a storm,
And your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind;
When trouble and distress come upon you.
28Then will they call me, but I will not answer,
They will seek me earnestly, but they shall not find me. Wisdom was there all along. God was trying to save us. Foolishly we chose our way rather than listen. Now we must bear the consequences of our choices.
29For that they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of the LORD;
30They would none of my counsel, They despised all my reproof.
31Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, The curse can only come because we allow it and choose it. God does everything to protect us and guide us. He constantly calls and woos us. Too often we choose our own ways and devices. And be filled with their own devices.
32For the waywardness of the thoughtless shall slay them,
And the confidence of fools shall destroy them.
33But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely,
And shall be quiet without fear of evil.’ Peace and security are the fruit of Wisdom – listening and following God’s ways. Dear Lord, reveal any foolishness in me today. Give me grace to turn and follow You. I choose Wisdom. Take my hand, Father. Guide me.
