DIVISION CHAPLAINS

If you woke up today with only what you had given thanks for yesterday, what would you have? How many of your family would still be here? Would you have clothes? A home? Friends? A job? Would you still have a Bible or any memory of scripture? What about the world? Would there be any sun, trees, birds, a sky?

Are you beginning to grasp the immensity of people, places and things we take for granted? Do you, like me, assume everything in our lives will always be there?
Let’s make that happen. How? Through Gratitude. Georg Simmel calls gratitude “the moral memory of mankind.” By being grateful for what we have, we become aware or mindful of our state of being and our state of living.

Gratitude is “a feeling of appreciation and thanks. It is the state of being grateful” according to Webster’s Dictionary. Robert Emmons says, “It’s an affirmation of goodness. We affirm that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits we’ve received.” He goes on to say, “We recognize the sources of this goodness is outside ourselves. We acknowledge that other people and higher powers [GOD] gave us many gifts, big and small, to help us achieve the goodness in our lives. It requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

That is the goal: to be in “the state of being grateful.” Why? Because of its multitude of benefits.gratitude-brings-happiness
Here are just 7 of the many scientifically documented benefits of gratitude.
Brings happiness: practicing gratitude is the MOST RELIABLE METHOD FOR INCREASING HAPPINESS and life satisfaction. It boosts feelings of optimism, joy, pleasure, enthusiasm and other positive emotions.
Gratitude reduces anxiety and depression.
Health Benefits include: lowers blood pressure; strengthens the immune system; reduces illness symptoms; better sleep; boosts desire to exercise which improves health.
Grateful people are more resilient after traumatic events. They recover quicker and better.
strengthens relationships, making them closer, even romantic ones.
Promotes forgiveness
Grateful people are more compassionate.

Gratitude greatly improves our lives! So how do we get more of it?

Cultivate Gratitude
Research shows practicing gratitude rewires our brain. Even if you are “naturally” a pessimist, if your brain screams “I can’t!”, “It’s impossible!” you can change with a little practice of 3 steps.
1. Name 3 things you are grateful for right now. Think about why you are thankful. Savor the feeling this appreciation creates. (If you are having trouble, think of what your life would be like if this “benefit” were removed.)
Name 3 objects or services
Name 3 people
Name 3 things about yourself for which you are grateful
Write a thank you / gratitude letter or note to someone. Mail or deliver it in person.
Give thanks to God as you walk, drive and live. See how many things you can give thanks for which God has provided.
Cultivate gratitude in others by asking them, “What 3 good things happened today?”

God loves grateful people. 23 verses in the Bible tell us to be thankful or grateful. He strongly warns us about evil talk such as complaining or gossiping about others. Think about it: did you get up this morning with the desire to seek out critical, complaining people? No! You probably put that on your ‘avoid-thanks-livingto-do’ list.
God wired us to be grateful, to exist in a state of gratitude. It’s our natural default. All the rest is learned behavior. If we learned it, we can unlearn it! Welcome to Thanks Living!

Imagine being awakened by a highway Patrolman at your door in the middle of the night. That’s what happened to Greg & Meri Bunsold. That’s how they learned their daughter had died in a auto accident in another state.

God Speed Ministry has opened the Bridge The Gap Fund to help them with the final expenses for their daughter. If you wish to help this couple during their time of sorrow, click this link. 100% of funds go to their expenses.  Or you can give through the God Speed Ministry App.  Just click on the Give Tab.

The recent tragedy which took the life of multi-time Top Sportsman World Champion, Ronnie Davis, and critically injured longtime drag racing journalist, Ian Tocher, has rocked the heart of the drag racing community. Davis succumbed to injuries on Sunday, April 10, after a violent top end crash during the last qualifying session at the PDRA Spring Nationals on Saturday, April 9. The car made contact with Tocher during the crash, as he was photographing the event. Tocher is being treated for injuries at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.

In order to help cover medical costs for Davis and “Bridge the Gap” while Tocher is sidelined for recovery, God Speed Ministry has opened donation accounts for each gentleman. One hundred percent of donations to those accounts will go directly to their needs.

To donate to Tocher’s medical and other expenses follow this link: IAN TOCHER.

To help the Davis family cover his medical expenses use the following link: RONNIE DAVIS.

To give where most needed use the general BRIDGE THE GAP Fund.

God Speed Ministry takes no fees and one hundred percent of donations to the Bridge the Gap Fund go directly to the individuals in need. So far the racing community has helped several individuals through God Speed Ministry’s Bridge the Gap Fund with donations upwards of $50,000 distributed in the last several years. All donations are also tax deductible and donors will receive a tax statement at the end of the year.

Prognosis for Tocher is very promising and has already been deemed miracle status.

Ronnie finished the race of life tonight and won the ultimate victory as the PDRA Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway crowned its champions. Ronnie also received his crown in glory for winning the ultimate race of life.

Ronnie was critically injured during his last qualifying pass at Rockingham on Saturday in a violent top end crash. It is with heavy hearts that we bid him farewell. It is with grateful hearts we thank God for having had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

Please continue to pray for his daughters Michelle Seger and Bridgett Medina and grandchildren of Texas, his longtime companion Micki Dearing and best friend Pete of Suwanee as they mourn.

Godspeed Ronnie!!
